New in office design: the balance between expediency and comfort

At the heart of any design solutions for the organization of the office is always the task of realizing the company’s goals. Attracting customers, increasing productivity, promoting the values of the organization – all these goals are not least connected with the organization of the working space, creating a comfortable and meaningful environment for employees and visitors.

The search for a balance between expediency and comfort began in the nineteenth century, when a skyscraper became the model of an office building for many years. Economical use of space here was the main advantage, but with the development of administrative science, the shortcomings became obvious: an unfriendly isolated environment suppressed and reduced the efficiency of workers. Attempts to expand the functionality of office space were the projects of business centers and business parks. But the need to “go to work” was still intuitively perceived as a heavy burden, which is why the development of the Internet and the “remote office” were perceived as liberation. Is it possible to conclude that the work on the organization of office space is no longer needed?

Quite the contrary. Today we are experiencing a revolution in office design, proceeding from completely new conditions: people should no longer go to the office, but they want to go there, their work needs to live communication and involvement with other people engaged in a common cause.

The oldest office design leader, Herman Miller, in 2013 introduced a new concept of office space: Living Office. The essence of the concept lies in the approach not “from outside”, but “from within”. The designer does not offer a standard project, within which people will have to exist, and based on the individual needs and characteristics of the company and employees, organizes space, “animating” the office, creating a growing and evolving environment. To date, Herman Miller has implemented hundreds of Living Office projects around the world, drawing on the analysis of six universal worker incentives and specific organization conditions.

The modern project of the office of the company is a product formed from the philosophy of the “Living Office”, the use of high technologies in the organization of space and thoughtful details of the daily functioning of working premises.

Analysis of work processes in the design of the office

A productive office can not be created, relying on beautiful pictures from magazines. The first task of a specialist is to analyze the technological processes taking place in the organization. A good office should not only provide, but also optimize them. A trading company, a law firm, or a graphic design studio, at first glance, have completely different requirements for office design, but the principles of organizing office space are the same. All office work ultimately boils down to concentration and communication, respectively, in each office areas are needed for both. The task of the designer is to find the best balance between them.

Traditionally, the office space is represented by two options: cabinets or open space. Corridors with closed offices for more than a hundred years have successfully provided the work of many and many organizations. The offices are designed for one or two people or a small team (up to 6 employees), actively in contact with each other, but weakly connected with other departments. Pros of office type: concentration, stability, safety. Minuses – minimum of communication, inefficient use of space.

Open spaces are the exact opposite of the offices: large rooms with low partitions accommodate a huge number of jobs. Advantages of open spaces: economy of space use, flexibility, dynamism, transparency-each in sight. Hence the disadvantages: weak insulation makes concentration difficult, reduces the sense of safety and comfort. Less radical solution: an open office for fewer people, with partitions visually separating it. Promotes interaction, unites employees, but problems remain.

At the end of the last century, combined offices were developed in Western Europe, especially in the Nordic countries, designed to solve the problems of the first two types and develop their advantages: each employee was given a place by the window, separated by transparent partitions from the common zone. The downside here is that such an office assumes a complex project of the building itself, it will not work out the conceived in any finished “box”.

Nevertheless, the combined office has become a stage on the way to modern Living Office from Nerman Miller, optimally balanced in terms of concentration and communication parameters.
